After several albums where Tomi Jenkins vocals became a prominent and distinct element, his
songwriting abilities moved to the forefront with the 1986 release of “Word Up”.Tomi
had the initial ideas behind the classic smash hits “Word Up”, “Single Life”
and “Candy”.He then took those ideas to the group
and collaborated with Larry Blackmon
on the lyrics and the song’s overall development. Those songs would lead to the album becoming a top five pop
chart hit, with the singles he co-wrote each going number #1 on the R&B charts and sampled by hip-hop artists like the
late Tupac Shakur and Will Smith and pop diva Mariah Carey among many others.
Cameo has garnered an
American Music Award and a Grammy nomination for those classic
hits!Tomi Jenkins won a Billboard
award from BMI for Mariah Carey’s version of “Candy” on “Lover Boy”.Tomi also co-wrote the hits “She’s Strange”, “Back and Forth” and “Flirt”.Tomi
released his first solo album “Tomi”
on Elektra Records that featured the
jazz great Branford Marsalis along
with other top musicians.
